 The Historical Society For the Preservation of the Underground Railroad was chartered by the New York State Board of Regents on October 5, 2001. The charter incorporated the associates and their successors as an education corporation, under the corporate name of Historical Society for the Preservation of the Underground Railroad. We received our 501(c)(3) status from the IRS late in 2002. The purposes for the corporation are:
a. To promote and encourage original historical research on the Underground Railroad; 
b. To gather, preserve, display and make available for study artifacts, relics, books, manuscripts, papers, photographs, and other records and materials relating to the history of the Underground Railroad in the state of New York;
c. To encourage the suitable marking of places of historic interest;
d. To acquire by purchase, gift, devise, or otherwise the title to or the custody and control of historic sites and structures, and to preserve and maintain such sites and structures; and
e. To support and work with local communities.

Membership and Dues

Annual dues for individual active members shall be Thirty Dollars ($30.00)
Annual dues for Student and Senior Citizens members shall be Twenty Dollars ($20.00)
Annual dues for Family Members shall be Thirty Dollars ($30.00)
Annual Dues for institutional Members shall Be One Hundred Dollars ($100.00)
Annual Dues for contributing and sustaining members shall be $200.00, $250.00, and $500.00.
Annual Dues for honorary members shall be Twenty Dollars ($20.00)
